With so many new cards dominating the format and the power level of Modern at an all-time high, the time is right to reevaluate the Modern banned list. In some sense, rather than being the greatest hits from the past 20 years of Magic, Modern is now the greatest hits of the last two or three years. ![]() Spells fare a bit better, but newer sets are still very overrepresented, with 12 of the top 25 being printed from original Modern Horizons to present. If you expand out to the top 25, 17 were printed since the original Modern Horizons, either in Modern Horizons sets or in Standard-legal sets. Six are from Modern Horizons 2 and the entire top ten outside of Stoneforge Mystic were printed in the past couple of years. Take a look at the 10 most-played creatures in the format. Cards printed in the last couple of years (from the original Modern Horizons forward) take up such a large part of the metagame that the format is almost unrecognizable, as compared to where it was a relatively short time ago. ![]() ![]() The power level of Modern is through the roof, thanks in large part to Modern Horizons and, to a lesser extent, other recent sets, to the point where you could argue that current Modern is almost Modern Horizons Block Constructed.
